Abstract Since the study of translation ethics is an important perspective in translation studies, the present paper attempts to conduct a research in this regard. The framework chosen for this research is the models for translation ethics proposed by Chesterman (2001). He, Chesterman (2001), introduces five kinds of ethical patterns of translation: ethics of representation, ethics of service, ethics of communication, norm-based ethics, and ethics of commitment (Chesterman, 2001: 139-154). Since each of these ethical patterns considers different aspects of translation ethics, the focus of this study is only on the ethics of representation and ethics of communication. This paper applies a comparative analysis of four books which two of them were Persian and translated into English, and the other two were in opposite. The Source Texts (STs) and Target Texts(TTs) are compared and analyzed sentence by sentence to find out which of these two ethical patterns are more manifested during the process of translation and to seek whether or not these ethical patterns are related to the concepts of foreignization and domestication and dominant/marginalized languages as defined by Venuti (2008). Since he describes domestication and foreignization as ethical attitudes to translation (Venuti 2008: 19), the researchers assume that there is a relationship between these two ethical patterns proposed by Chesterman (2001) and foreignization and domestication in translations which are power-related. In other words, while translating from a dominant language like English into other languages like Persian, those models of ethics in relation with foreignization are more manifested but while translating from other languages like Persian into a dominant language like English, those models of ethics related to domestication are more observed in translation.
ethics, power. foreignization, domestication
