Problem Statement Chronic diseases such as cancer heart disease and Alzheimer s disease are on the rise and finding natural remedies to prevent and treat these diseases is essential. Ziziphus a plant used in traditional medicine has been shown to have various health benefits. However more investigation is needed to fully understand its effects on human health. Research Purpose The purpose of this short summary is to review the current research on Ziziphus and its potential health benefits including its antioxidant anti-inflammatory sleep aid digestive aid immune-boosting and potential anti-cancer properties. Research Method A literature review was conducted to identify relevant studies on Ziziphus and its health benefits. PubMed Science Direct and Google Scholar were used to search for articles published in the last ten years. The search terms included Ziziphus health benefits antioxidant anti-inflammatory sleep aid digestive aid immune-boosting and anti-cancer. Results and Conclusion Ziziphus is a genus of trees and shrubs belonging to the Rhamnaceae family with approximately 40 taxa found worldwide. In Iran there are approximately five species of Ziziphus each possessing distinct properties and uses. The most species of Ziziphus are found in temperate and cold temperate regions while other species such as Ziziphus spina-christii L. Ziziphus anchor Boiss Ziziphus lotus L Ziziphus mauritiana Lam and Ziziphus nummularia Burm are specific to hot and humid regions of southern Iran. These species have been used in traditional medicine for centuries and recent research has shown that they have various health benefits. Other uses of this plant Due to the appealing appearance of its leaves and tree trunks young Ziziphus species are cultivated as ornamental plants in parks. Ziziphus leaves possess detergent properties when a small fresh leaf is crushed in one s palms it creates a lather with water that can be utilized in lieu of soap. Certain Ziziphus trees which can reach a height of up to eight meters are cultivated for their attractive wood. Chemical composition The Ziziphus fruit tissue is highly abundant in vitamins especially vitamin C. Ziziphus varieties typically possess a sugar content of 20-30% protein content ranging from 0.8% to 19.2% ash content between 0.4-0.73% and fat content ranging from 0.1-0.3%. Fresh Ziziphus fruit contains 76.9% moisture 1.6% protein and 4.20% sugar and is commonly consumed in its dried form. The moisture sugar raw protein and ash content in dried Ziziphus are 7.25% 960.4% and 7.4% respectively. Ziziphus has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and recent research has shown that it has various health benefits. One of the most significant benefits of Ziziphus is its antioxidant properties. Ziziphus contains flavonoids and phenolics which have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are essential to protect the body against free radicals that can cause inflammation and chronic diseases like cancer heart disease and Alzheimer s disease.
