The Logic of Translation: Implications for Research in Iran

چکیده
It is not uncommon for research in postgraduate translation studies in Iran to apply already established models of translation into the Iranian context, mutatis mutandis. The application of dichotomies, often in the name of ‘translation strategies’, is arguably among the most popular lines of research in Iran. However, it is often the case that the logical fallacy immanent in these dichotomies slips unnoticed so much so that research findings often contradict the realities of translation once viewed from the perspective of the logic of translation. Against this backdrop, the present study takes up the issue of the logic of translation. In so doing, it pits Aristotelian logic against fuzzy logic. Simply put, while the former accords a value of either 0 or 1 to propositions at the exclusion of other alternatives, the latter allows truth values to range from 0 to 1, factoring in the middle grounds. The study then sets out to juxtapose these two logics in the context of translation studies with translational equivalence as its case study, exposing serious theoretical shortcomings in applying Aristotelian logic into translation and arguing how replacing this logic with fuzzy logic can enrich our insights into translation. It is hoped that the findings of this study may prove enlightening for doing research in translation studies in Iran.کليدواژه ها
