چکیده
Contrastive rhetoric holds that the people in different cultures organize their ideas in different ways. However, the research areas of CR have mostly provided us with descriptions of rhetorical styles and their characteristics at the surface level or in other words it generally focuses on a text analysis of product ignoring the process. It has not offered the users of this field like ELS and EFL writing instructors with insight into the important cultural and religious assumptions of particular groups of people; that is, how students from other cultures and religions look at and express reality and what rhetorical assumptions causes them to write differently form native English speakers. The present paper is an attempt to go to the deeper levels and look for the roots of the mentioned differences by doing a cross-cultural analysis of rhetorical patterns in Persian and English correspondence. It was tried to detect the influence of religion on culture and consequently on discourse by adapting Kaplan’s, Whorf’s hypotheses about culture and thought and language by rhetorical analysis of 15 English and Persian condolence letters written by Iranian ELF learners and the data were analyzed in terms of culture and religion dimensions. The findings of the study indicated that religion, in this case, Islam, has a significant effect on the format and the content of condolence letters written by Iranian EFL learners. These finding can imply that English instructors should be familiar with the roots of rhetorical differences and then transfer them to students.کليدواژه ها
