
Estimating Capability of Flipped Classroom on Idiom learning of English Foreign Language Learners

Idiomatic expressions have an extent use in everyday language, but they have always been very difficult for foreign language learners to comprehend and use. The use of technologies like mobile phones in teaching and learning can provide a pleasant learning condition and positively affect learning idioms. So, this study examines the effect of Flipped Classroom on enhancing English foreign language (EFL) students’ idioms through mobile assisted language learning (MALL). To this end, 60 intermediate EFL learners aged 13 to 17 were chosen using Oxford Placement Test (OPT). First, they were randomly divided into an experimental (the flipped group) and a control group. During 5 sessions, 20 idioms were taught to each group. In the flipped group, the idioms were taught through an application installed on their cell phones before the class, and the class time was mostly devoted to communicative activities and the same idioms were taught to the participants of the control group through a book. After the instruction, an immediate post-test and a delay-teat were conducted to test the participants’ intake and retention of the idioms. The participants of the flipped group outperformed their counterparts in the control group in the post-test. After analyzing the results, it was established that using MALL through flipped classes could increase intermediate students’ intake and retention of idioms. The outcomes of this study can help the learners to enhance their interest and motivation in idiom learning.کليدواژه ها
