چکیده

Given that affect is an indispensable ingredient of communication, the present study investigates whether affective meaning could be a factor that may modulate the degree of language processing in bilinguals. The participants were 28 Persian-English bilinguals (17 female and 11 male) who were studying at the Department of English Language Teaching of the University of Gonabad. Since the aim of the present study was to investigate the behavioral and cognitive processing of affective meaning, PsychoPy (version 3) was used to design and perform a semantic decision task. In this task, participants see a pair of words presented one after each other (first, a noun and then, an adjective), and are asked to decide whether or not the target word is related in meaning to the preceding word. The stimuli consisted of 30 congruent noun-adjective dyads (positive prime-positive target and negative prime-negative target) and 30 incongruent noun-adjective pairs (positive prime-negative target and negative prime-positive target) in both Persian and English. Using SPSS (version 24), the 2 (prime valence: positive, negative) × 2 (target valence: positive, negative) × 2 (language: Persian, English) Mixed Factorial Repeated Measure ANOVA was run on reaction time and error rate with language as a between-subject factor. The results showed that affective valence is an important factor in modulating the degree of language processing in bilinguals. Further analysis revealed that the bilinguals followed a similar pattern in processing affective meaning of single words in their first and second language which supports the hypothesis of parallel lexical access.
