Iranian EFL Teachers’ Present Assessment Needs

Assessment is an umbrella term incorporating language teachers’ goals, proficiencies, teaching and testing preferences. Some studies have been conducted on different aspects of assessment. One of these aspects is the assessment needs of teachers. Having gained the importance of assessment needs, the present study focuses on the present assessment needs of Iranian EFL teachers. In order to reach the goal of the study, a 50-item questionnaire was constructed and administered to 258 EFL teachers asking them to self-rate their current level of ability in language assessment. Apart from the questionnaire, a follow-up, semi-structured interview was also used to seek their opinions on assessment needs. Analyzing the data quantitatively, SPSS (version 21) was employed. Using descriptive statistics including frequency and percentage, results showed that Iranian EFL teachers can manage assessment needs differently. 19 present assessment needs could be managed, 29 could be handled using little help, one could be dealt with using a lot of help and one cannot be done at all by Iranian EFL teachers. Results of the qualitative analyses also supported those of the quantitative findings, focusing on the differences of abilities and problems of EFL teachers in handling different assessment needs. The findings suggest that it is necessary to provide Iranian EFL teachers with more pre or in service testing training. The findings of this study can be beneficial in both literature of assessment needs and pedagogy.کليدواژه ها
