چکیده
Deixis and cognition, in Stockwell’s words, are tightly interwoven. Deictic shift theory, as an approach to cognitive deixis, recently has provided a means for investigating the viewpoints in the literary texts. Generically speaking, drama has been tended to disregard. The present study aims to examine deictic shift theory in Sam Shepard’s Cowboy Mouth (1971) and to demonstrate that by immersing and ’recentering,’ the reader acquires a cognitive stance within the storyworld. Through the shifts within any of the deictic fields, the reader is able to perceive implicitly the perspective of the character or the narrator inside the text-world. Further, it is argued that the reader might move up or down by ‘POPping’ out or ‘PUSHing’ into the deictic fields. In Sam Shepard’s play, to give some examples, the violation of the ontological boundaries by changing the time of year by an act of will or the presence of some narratives as stories within the play engenders so many POPs and PUSHes in the deictic fields and enforces the reader to have the deictic shift.کليدواژه ها
