چکیده

By and large, experimental pragmatics research on (im)politeness involves “off-line” methodologies. That is to say, data reflect ratings or understanding of given texts or interactions after they have been processed. “On-line” methods provide moment-by-moment data collection as input is processed. Several studies have been conducted on second language learners’ processing. However, there is a lack of comprehensible information about mechanisms that underlie foreign language learners’ real-time politeness processing. This study, therefore, set out to investigate the degree to which pragmatic information would affect readers’ processing of English taboo words, employing an off-line questionnaire and an on-line self-paced reading task. To this end, 40 university students at advanced and intermediate levels who studied English as a foreign language (EFL) took part in the study. Also, to examine the effect of pragmatic information on the participants, the timing in the ongoing language processing were captured, using E-prime (version 2.0), which is a software package used primarily in psychological research. The statistical analyses revealed that pragmatic information in the on-line task affected advanced and intermediate EFL learners in a different way. Besides, the pragmatic information had a significant effect on the EFL learners’ reading times of the texts containing taboo words. The results imply that impoliteness judgment may be formed before they reach the threshold of conscious awareness. Moreover, the findings indicate that Iranian EFL learners are sensitive to pragmatic information during real-time politeness processing. This study provides some insights into the mechanism that underlie politeness processing among EFL learners.
