The Negative Qualities and Characteristics of Iranian EFL Teachers, Learners, and Classes; Possible Remedies

It has been purported that learning a foreign or second language, whatever it is, can best occur only under certain favorable circumstances. The lack of any of those particular circumstances would lead to severe, interminable problems in learning, i.e. either incomplete, inappropriate learning or no learning at all will happen. This study surveys those characteristics of Iranian EFL teachers, learners, and classes that are potential to cause deviations in learning the English language. The present study also addresses such important issues as Iranian learner`s various range of motivations for learning English, possible constraints that may impede both learning and teaching processes, teacher`s roles and responsibilities to monitor and lead the class to the right track, learner`s roles and attitudes in order to remove some obstacles, classroom organization and arrangement of seats and the teacher`s proper place inside the classroom , the extent to which Iranian learners are exposed to English input both inside and outside the classroom, etc. The present study has been carried out on the foundation of some longitudinal exact and condense observations of two groups of 15 Iranian male intermediate English learners in an Iran`s private language institute that were selected and supervised as precisely as possible. Results indicated that our pedagogical system, which is shared in most of the Iranian language institutes as well as public schools, is extremely deviated from international pedagogical standards and norms requiring an immediate, comprehensive deep reform in order to get the highest outcome. Furthermore, it was revealed that we really need to modify both teachers and learner`s roles, perceptions, and attitudes toward learning English so that we can optimize the effectiveness our instruction. We also have to alter our language classrooms` organization and arrangement to get rid of those traditional procedures and methods in which students are sitting in rows facing the teacher and most of the time repeating and manipulating what is the teacher the textbook and the educational system imposing them.کليدواژه ها
