چکیده
This study aims at reading The Death of Ivan Ilych with respect to Baudrillard s theory of consumption. Baudrillard s model provides a fresh outlook for reading the signs in a literary text. He claims that the objects in a consumer society are the signs which can display one s wealth and success. This study will show how the theme of consumerism is presented in this novella, which will provide valuable insights into the life of the characters and how the minds and the manners of the characters are influenced by such a culture. It will be demonstrated how the objects have constraining power over the individuals and how one s identity depends on and is defined through objects and activities. Drawing upon Baudrillard s theory, the study will determine how the characters interactions with the objects become even more important than genuine intimacy with the other people in the story and the ways in which the commodities turn to the external signs through which one s happiness and success are measured.کليدواژه ها
