Investigating Iranian EFL Teacher s Strategies toward Invoking Silent EFL Learners to Speak

The most important purpose of the present study was to examine teachers’ strategies in invoking silent students to speak. The study investigated Iranian teachers’ classroom practice, reaction and beliefs, and eventually differences in usage of strategies. The study benefited from the contribution of 47 members; 15 teachers and 32 EFL silent learners both male and female participants who were teachers and learners of both intermediate and advanced classed in one Language Learning Institute. This study employed a triangulated research approach involving questionnaire, observation, interview and an oral exam to check silent students changes. The study aimed at exploring the Motivation, Action, and Participation (MAP) strategies employed by Iranian English teachers with a focus on; first, the frequency of MAP strategies in their teaching practice was obtained via chi-square test, and second, the differences between strategies of teachers who succeed to make significant changes in student s silence (group A) and those who didn’t (group B) through two sample t-test to compare the means. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were adopted to collect the data in this study in order to guarantee the reliability and validity of the research and also to interpret the differences between perspectives of group A and B towards MAP strategies in language teaching in the best way. The findings suggested that teachers strategies played a significant role in making silent students speak. The results showed that the mean score of teachers in group A was higher than the teachers in group B. The results of the questionnaire and observation were significantly different.کليدواژه ها
