The Comparative Effects of Cooperative and Competitive Learning on Speaking Ability and Self-Confidence of Intermediate EFL Learners

چکیده

Abstract The present study aimed at investigating the comparative effect of cooperative and competitive learning on EFL learners’ speaking ability and self-confidence. Moreover, it intended to identify EFL students’ attitudes toward cooperative and competitive learning. To this end, 90 male intermediate EFL learners were selected among 140 through their performance on a sample PET. The participants were assigned into three groups of 30 students (i.e., cooperative, competitive and control). Moreover, the Academic Confidence Scale was administered to the three groups to measure their levels of self-confidence before the treatment. At the end of the treatment, another speaking section of PET and the Academic Confidence Scale were again administered. Additionally, 10 EFL students were selected randomly from each experimental group and were interviewed. The results suggested that cooperative and competitive learning had a significant effect on EFL learners’ speaking ability. Furthermore, it was indicated that cooperative learning had a significant effect on EFL learners’ self-confidence; however, competitive learning was found not to have any significant effect on EFL learners’ self-confidence. Moreover, it was revealed that cooperative learning had a statistically more significant effect on speaking ability and self-confidence of EFL learners. The results of the interviews indicated that the majority (90%) believed that CL strategies helped EFL students develop their own ideas and issues in greater depth and thus improved their motivation and creativity to speak, and 80% of the respondents stated that CL strategies reduced anxiety and improved their confidence.
