چکیده
The importance of pragmatic knowledge in the language ability construct is not disputed, yet its role in interlanguage development has only recently begun to be researched empirically, particularly within the aspect of comprehension (Beltrán-Palanques, 2016). The present mixed-methods study investigated whether pragmatic knowledge or vocabulary knowledge can better predict inference questions of listening comprehension. The study also tried to explore the relationship among pragmatic knowledge, aural vocabulary knowledge, and inference questions of listening comprehension. A sample of 120 male and female Iranian university EFL students majoring in English literature were randomly selected from a University in Iran. Their language proficiency ranged from intermediate to advance. The data were collected through three different tests including Multiple Choice Discourse Completion Test (MDCT), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT), and Aural Vocabulary Knowledge (AVK). Multiple Regression results demonstrated that pragmatic knowledge is a better and more powerful predicator of inference questions of listening comprehension than vocabulary knowledge. Moreover, Pearson correlation revealed that there is a significant relationship among vocabulary knowledge, pragmatic knowledge and listening comprehension. The qualitative findings from semi-structured interviews also indicated that almost all participants mentioned pragmatic knowledge as a necessary component of English language which improved their performance on inference questions. Moreover, interview findings revealed that students had no prior experience in pragmatic education in their classes and the implementation of pragmatic assessment had many educational benefits for them. It is suggested that teachers pay special attention to pragmatic assessment in their classrooms, and increase learner s awareness concerning different pragmatic competences such as sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic.کليدواژه ها
