چکیده

Saul Bellow’s characters usually unveil melancholic symptoms. They are typically occupied by feelings of fear, woebegone, and desolation; they loathe themselves; and, they are disposed to recklessness and self-annihilation. Their dejection and agony are because of imbalances they experience in their life. A body in space can be discursive configuring action, meaning, plan, plot, and structure. It means body pose in space is expressive and enunciative, space serving a context for the body to speak. Space, in other words, provides circumstances to which body is stimulated to respond - it is acted upon and reacts. The responses are then discursive fragments, schematic source for interpretation and analysis as Roland Barthes discusses in A Lover’s Discourse. The so-called fact indicates necessity of shift in consideration of melancholy concerning body affected by spatial relations and circumstances. This shift needs to be topological that concerns body in space. This study considers melancholic symptoms as responses bodies show in reaction to exclusion and erasure from certain spaces that will be analyzed in Bellow’s oeuvre. There are, in fact, spatial circumstances that a body is estranged or erased from that particular space; this body is not completely crossed out or absent from the space, yet its presence seems deplorable and insupportable. So such bodies are misfits that their direct body pose is melancholy.
