A Study of Referential devices in Soft vs. Hard Scineces

چکیده
The main purpose of the present study is to examine the way reference as a cohesive device, having the subcategories of anaphora, cataphora and exophora, is used in the abstract section of academic research articles in soft vs. hard sciences. The texts of the study were randomly selected from research articles in a soft science (ELT) and a hard science (chemistry). Each group of texts included 50 research article abstracts. The texts were examined to investigate the frequency and types of referential elements employed by the research article writers in these two domains. The results of the study indicated that compared to research article abstracts in chemistry, research article abstracts in ELT include more referential devices. Also it was found that while anaphoric reference is the most frequently used device by the writers of research articles in both domains, the writers of ELT research articles have a significantly greater tendency to employ anaphoric referential elements. Based on these results, it can be inferred that science type have an influential role in the use of referential devices in the abstract section of academic research articles. The study suggests some implications for ESP, teaching writing, and developing materials for academic writing courses.کليدواژه ها
