
The evaluation of the undergraduate practicum program in English teacher education regarding the application and teaching of innovation

چکیده
The new curriculum at Iran’s most important teacher education university (Farhangian University) contains a practicum program for prospective English teachers extended over 4 semesters. As innovation is among the most important objectives of any educational system and program in 21st century, the present study aims at evaluating how innovation is taken into account in this practicum course and secondly, how successful is this program in developing innovation in the language teachers. For this purpose, two procedures were utilized: evaluations of available formal documents and a checklist developed by the researcher to be answered by students (N= 64), teachers who had worked with students in the practicum (N= 12) and educators (teacher trainers, N= 4). The results indicated that in spite of the provision of aspects of innovation in this course, the course is not regarded by the three groups as successful in developing innovative teachers due to the lack of resources and facilities, lack of clear and explicit rules and lack of cooperation on the part of schools, teachers and Organizations of Education. In addition, a significant finding of the study is that the observation of innovative teachers seems not to help prospective teachers in becoming innovative in their conceptualization of language teaching.کليدواژه ها
