The Effects of Reading Strategy Instruction on Iranian EFL Learners’ Oral Reading Fluency

This study tried to investigate the effect of IELTS reading strategy instruction on Iranian EFL learners’ oral reading fluency. To this end, 60 male Iranian foreign language learners with intermediate level of English proficiency were sampled through convenience sampling and later screened by means of a Preliminary English Test (PET). Afterwards, the participants were divided into two groups; One experimental group received a set of metacognitive IELTS reading strategy during reading fluency sessions through CALLA model, and control group received traditional instruction. The reading sample was taught based on IELTS test performance for both experimental, and control groups. A reliable and valid reading fluency test was used to investigate their accuracy and automaticity in reading fluency, and their pitch was analyzed using PRAAT software to determine the effect of treatment on the experimental groups’ oral reading fluency prior to and after the intervention phase. The results of the study indicated that IELTS reading strategy instruction had a significant effect on oral reading fluency of the experimental group. Therefore, IELTS candidates, university students, language teachers, and material developers might benefit from the findings of this study.کليدواژه ها
