چکیده

International news coverage by media is mediated through translation. Still, based on Mona Baker’s (2006) Narrativity Theory, every translation is considered to be a re-narration and reconstruction of reality. Among the major international news stories, both positive and negative re-narrations of which could affect the international position and interests of Iranians, are the controversies surrounding Iran s nuclear enrichment program. The present CDA study aims at exploring the way Western English news media have handled and (possibly) reconstructed pertinent translations to cover the nuclear enrichment program news both before and after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA known as BARJAM in Iran) accord. The four major features of the Narrativity Theory were utilized to investigate how JCPOA news is (re-)narrated for the Western addressees and the extent to which the news by established Western outlets adhere to or diverge from the original (Persian) news reports. The corpus of the study includes 50 news stories(30 videos and 20 text reports). The findings revealed that the narratives of the issue have been reframed in the English news media and the distribution of narrativity features differed in text reports (mostly framing feature) and video talks (mostly selective appropriation feature). Overall, almost all translations directly or indirectly conveyed skepticism towards Iran s intentions for enriching Uranium. We conclude with a suggested framework with clear implications noting how translation can play a significant role in constructing the reality and the way such reconstruction may be imposed by the ideologies of the translators or their respective institutional policies.
