چکیده

In his dystopian novel, George Orwell coined a number of brand new terms to represent totalitarian and authoritarian fashions of politics, certain neologisms previously unknown to literature, society and culture. Since achieving the proper equivalents in translation of such language-specific expressions seems to be of a great significance, the present paper aims to make assessments on the treatments of two contemporary Iranian translators with neologisms in George Orwell s 1984. The paper employs Juliane House’s functional-pragmatic model of TQA (1997, 2015) as well as common word/term formation strategies already proposed by morphologists to assess the quality of translated neologisms in Persian translations of Kaveh Mirabbasi(2018) and S. Hossein Arjani (2010, included in Saleh Hosseini s translation) from the appendix of novel in question. The translation processes involved will be analyzed in detail in order to find out which translator has relatively been more successful in rendering these expressions, taking into account the principles already outlined by Orwell, himself, in his appendix to the novel, “Newspeak Principles”. The paper further describes how these translators incorporated various aspects of such a coinage strategy into their translations and elaborates on whether or not the translators, as linguistic innovators, have invented appropriate new terms in Persian semantically, syntactically and pragmatically.
