چکیده

Abstract Due to its interdisciplinary nature, the Translation Studies faces new conflicts such as the translation of audiovisual products. The ‘translation laws’ or ‘translation universals’ have become the starting point of much academic research in the field of Translation Studies. Translation scholars are still speculating whether translation universals exist and if so, what categories can be discerned. Thanks especially to semiotics, the notion of text has been expanded well beyond written genres. The movie is an obvious case of a unit of meaning, which communicates through more than one channel; however, some translation scholars believe that the universals of translation do exist in all types of translations except audiovisual ones. In order to respond this conflict, the American movie of ‘Inception’ and its official Persian dubbed version by IRIB (Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting) are considered as the cases of this study. The current study aims at identifying whether the universals of translation exist in the translation of audiovisual products as well, or they are only limited to textual and oral translations. One of the implicit finding of this study is to discover and analyze the strategies and policies taken by the dubbing team. Due to the fact that the findings of this study are limited only to a single dubbed movie, the results cannot be generalized beyond its scope; however, it can pave the way for further future studies.
