Exploring Technology Standards and Developing a Measure for Evaluating Iranian High School EFL Teachers’ Technology Competence

چکیده

The pace and extent of change in technology for language teaching have placed challenging demands on teachers in general and high school EFL teachers and their administrators in specific. One way to comply with these demands would be to define technology standards for teachers that can make teacher technology evaluation process a success. The purpose of the present study was to explore technology standards for high school EFL teachers and then to develop a questionnaire to evaluate their technology competence. To this end, 30 experienced high school EFL teachers and 10 teacher educators at Farhangian University were randomly selected and interviewed to explore high school EFL teacher technology standards through adapting TESOL (2008) technology standards. Analysis of the interviews showed that the interviewees recognized 52 performance indicators out of 65 performance indicators suggested by TESOL (2008) as suitable technology standards for high school EFL teachers and necessary to evaluate their technology competence. Then, in accordance with the proposed performance indicators, a self-assessment questionnaire was designed to evaluate Iranian high school EFL teachers’ technology competence.To examine its reliability and construct validity, the questionnaire was administered to 290 high school EFL teachers. The results showed that the questionnaire is a valid and reliable measure to evaluate Iranian high school EFL teachers’ technology competence. The results of this study can be used to evaluate high school EFL teachers’ technology competence at provincial and national level.
