چکیده

Modern tragedy has placed itself within the heart of contemporary literature since the onset of the new literary tradition known as modernism, which flourished along with the ongoing tragedy of the twentieth-century life to constitute the fundamentals of human existence and the basis of psychoanalytic and poststructuralist theories on the nature of language. Soon after Friedrich Nietzsche’s Birth of Tragedy (1872) triggered a new trend among authors and critics of different genres to do away with Aristotelian definition of a well-ordered play in favor of depicting the tragedy of the common man, tragedy became the expression of human condition in this world: pains, suffering, vain wishes, and futility of human willpower finally led to annihilation of man’s desire to live. Among modern recognized novelists of different backgrounds who showed great interest in exploring this newly born notion beyond its limits is Margaret Duras whose Moderato Cantabile (1958) provides us with the opportunity to scrutinize not only the tragedy but also its effects on characters from the perspective of Jean-Marie Domenach’s ‘agony of language’. Duras’s narrative depicts the role of the tragedy of language as well as the many strategies her characters apply to soothe their pain, put their suffering behind, and struggle endlessly to move ahead. Findings of the study delineate such modern vision of tragedy through depicting the way the seemingly insignificant moments become the major causes of tragedy for the characters whose impossible desires make them revolt against the set social rules in the never-ending cycle of the struggle.
