چکیده
Vocabulary knowledge is an essential element in learning a foreign language (Schmitt, 2008). Among a variety of strategies used for L2 vocabulary development, vocabulary logs have been recommended as useful tools (e.g., Foster, 2009; Bilov´a, 2017). Contributing to this line of research, the present study reports on a classroom-based study conducted in three Speaking and Listening Comprehension intact classes at a university during two consecutive semesters. A number of 57 EFL learners engaged in six collaborative tasks, each containing 15 new words chosen from standard academic wordlists. The classes were randomly assigned to three conditions: one control and two experiments. In the control group, the learners completed the tasks in groups without being required to record the new words in a separate worksheet; while, in the two experimental groups, the learners were required to enter the new words, accompanied by their parts of speech, definitions, and example sentences in a teacher-designed vocabulary log. Hard-copied logs were used in one of the experimental classes, while digital logs created in Google Spreadsheets application were used in the other experimental class. Learners’ knowledge of the target vocabulary was measured before, immediately after, and three weeks after the study by a constructed-response vocabulary test. Results indicated significant vocabulary developments in the two experimental groups, with a clear advantage for digital vocabulary logs. Learners’ responses to a post-study questionnaire offered insights into the benefits and issues of the employed tools. The findings are discussed and implications for language instructors, especially those interested in CALL, are provided.کليدواژه ها
