Investigating the antifungal effect of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Myrtus communis leaves against aflatoxin-producing Aspergillus flavus

چکیده
Introduction Myrtus communis is a shrub and evergreen plant that grows in the plains of Asian countries including Iran and Mediterranean countries. Previous studies show the presence of antifungal compounds in various plant extracts. The aim of this study was to investigate the antifungal activity of the aqueous and alcoholic extracts of this plant against Aspergillus flavus which produces aflatoxin. Methods The soaking method was used to prepare the aqueous extract of this plant. The antifungal activity of the aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the plant was determined by macrodilution and determination of MIC and MFC. The antioxidant properties of the plant extracts were determined by DPPH method. Results The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the alcoholic extract on A. flavus was 3.12 mg ml and the MIC of the aqueous extract was 6.25 mg ml. Also the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of the alcoholic extract on A. flavus was 6.25 mg ml and the MFC of the aqueous extract was 12.5 mg ml. These results show that the alcoholic extract has better antifungal activity than the aqueous extract at both concentrations tested. The mean diameter of the non-growth halo of the extracts on A. flavus was smaller than the mean diameter of the non-growth halo of the antibiotic nystatin. The study of the antioxidant properties of the plant extracts using the DPPH method and the IC50 of ascorbic acid as a positive control showed that the IC50 value was 0.2 mg ml for ascorbic acid and 3.6 mg ml for the alcoholic extract and 4.71 mg ml for the aqueous extract. Conclusion By demonstrating the efficacy of the aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Myrtus communis against the strain of A. flavus we can hope that in the future by purifying the active substance of Myrtus communis and conducting further research we will obtain combined herbal medicines with acceptable antifungal effects and low side effects. The identification and use of medicinal plant extracts may be useful in combating pathogens especially fungi.کليدواژه ها
