Allium akaka a review of its phytochemical characteristics and traditional medicinal uses in Iran

چکیده
Statement of Problem Allium akaka S.G. Gmelin ex Schult. & Schult. f. locally known as Vaalak is a medicinal plant that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family. It is endemic to Iran and listed as endangered due to over collection. Many diseases may be treated effectively using this plant as a herbal medication Research Purpose The purpose of this review summary is to investigate an endemic species of the genus Allium in Iran with an emphasis on its phytochemical characteristics and potential medicinal properties as described in the literature Research Method To investigate the use of wild Allium species in Iran data from various sources were collected. Based on the available literature information on the traditional uses of Allium akaka in Iran was gathered. Results and Conclusion In traditional medicine Allium species have been used for blood purification digestion problems blood pressure reduction headache liver diseases diarrhea and arthritis. The sulfur compounds present in Allium plants are highly reactive giving them strong antimicrobial effects. Allium akaka is a plant species used in Iranian traditional medicine for its potential wound healing antibacterial and anthelmintic properties.The plant is consumed as food and medicine and young to flowering plants are eaten as a vegetable. It has been found to be beneficial for the treatment of cholera tuberculosis skin diseases and rheumatism. The different parts of this species have been used in folk medicine for the treatment of infectious diseases kidney stones and cough. Additionally the plant has therapeutic effects on diabetes reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and preventing hypertension caused by diabetes. The available literature suggests a link between the chemical content of Allium akaka and its therapeutic effects in traditional medicine. Thus this plant has potential as a herbal medication for the mentioned ailments. However more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness.کليدواژه ها
